Marvel Rebrands Streaming Efforts as Marvel Television and Marvel Animation
Marvel Studios is undergoing a major rebranding effort as it prepares to launch its upcoming series “Agatha All Along” on Disney+ in September. The company is shifting its focus to differentiate its live-action and animated content under the Marvel Television and Marvel Animation banners, respectively. This move comes as Marvel aims to dispel the notion that its content must be consumed in a specific order to fully understand the narrative.
According to Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, the rebranding is a signal to audiences that Marvel offers a variety of genres within its brand. The interconnectedness of previous Marvel series, where storylines from shows like “WandaVision” and “Loki” carried over into feature films, will be de-emphasized moving forward. Marvel wants viewers to have a satisfying experience regardless of where they start within the Marvel universe.
The separate Marvel Spotlight banner will continue to highlight character-driven shows less connected to the MCU, with upcoming series like “Wonder Man” starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The rebranding was first noticed during Disney’s Upfront presentation, where Marvel Studios showcased first looks at new series like “Ironheart” and “Daredevil: Born Again” under the new logos.
The decision to rebrand comes as Marvel aims to streamline its production process and focus on quality over quantity. Disney CEO Bob Iger recently announced a reduction in Marvel’s TV pipeline, with plans to release about two TV series a year instead of the previous four. Winderbaum notes that this course correction was already underway at Marvel, with a more considered approach to developing and producing television projects.
As Marvel prepares to launch its new series under the Marvel Television and Marvel Animation banners, fans can expect a more diverse range of content that allows for a more flexible viewing experience within the Marvel universe.
